Brightspace Assignments

This post is also available in: Nederlands (Dutch)

Using the Assignments function in Brightspace, it is possible to add instructions to an assignment, set deadlines, set assessment criteria, assess submitted work and provide feedback. If an assessment includes (partial) grades, you can display the grades in Grades.

Assignments has several options around the process of creating, submitting and grading assignments, such as:

  • choice between individual assignments and group assignments;
  • submit a group product by one student and automatically give the whole group the same assessment;
  • set submission conditions;
  • allow assignments to be submitted in different file types (including text, audio or video files);
  • exempt students from the assignment;
  • assess student work using annotations and rubrics;
  • set up multiple assessors;
  • check student work for plagiarism using Turnitin.

Use the manuals on Brightspace Support if you want to learn more about Brightspace Assignments.

Is it possible to modify assignments that have already been placed?

If no assignments have been submitted by students yet, it is possible to make adjustments, the same options are available as when creating the assignment.
If documents have already been submitted, some settings can no longer be changed.

How do I arrange to make Assignments easily findable for students?

There are several ways to make Assignments in Brightspace accessible to students.
The best and simplest way is to create an Assignment anywhere in the Content, by choosing ‘Add New’ in a Unit, Lessons or Folder.

Another way is via the Assignments tab under ‘Activities’, there are all Assignments in a course visible and accessible. Make sure you give the Assignments a clear and distinguished title. You can also create categories, for instance for group assignments, individual assignments and final assignments.

If you create an Assignment via the Assignments tab, a student will not see it in the Content. You must then use the ‘Add existing’ button to place the Assignment in the corresponding Unit, Lessons or Folder.

You are free to share and adapt, if you give appropriate credit and use it non-commercially. More on Creative Commons
